Dr Connor Mercer
Dr Connor Michael Pietro Mercer is a medical doctor based at the Waterfall Sports and Orthopaedic Centre with a focused interest in Sports and Exercise Medicine. He obtained his medical degree (MBBCh) from the University of the Witwatersrand and completed his internship at the Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex, followed by community service at Nompumelelo Provincial Hospital in the Eastern Cape.
His early clinical training provided broad exposure to emergency medicine, trauma, orthopaedics, anaesthetics, obstetrics, paediatrics, and inpatient medical care, often within high-acuity and resource-limited environments. This experience contributed to a strong foundation in musculoskeletal assessment, acute injury management, and peri-operative patient care.
Dr Mercer is currently registered for the MSc (Sports and Exercise Medicine) degree through WITS University and is pursuing formal training in Sports and Exercise Medicine. His clinical interests include endurance athlete health, injury prevention and rehabilitation, return-to-play decision-making, and training load management. He is a member of the South African Sports Medicine Association (SASMA).
Alongside his clinical and academic work, Dr Mercer competes at an elite level in long-course triathlon and endurance sport. He has achieved multiple national and international age-group titles, Ironman African Championship age-group victories, and qualifications for the Ironman World Championships, with a personal best Ironman time of 8 hours and 42 minutes. His experience as a high-performance endurance athlete informs his clinical understanding of training demands, injury mechanisms, and recovery, supporting a practical and evidence-based approach to athlete care within a multidisciplinary sports and orthopaedic setting.
