Dr Andy Branfield
Dr Andy Branfield graduated from Wits Medical School in 1985 and obtained his postgraduate qualification in sports medicine from the University of New South Wales, Australia in 2001.
He has been a Diving Medical Examiner and a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner since 1988, is a board member of the Divers Alert Network (DAN) and is the current President of the South African Underwater and Hyperbaric Medical Association (SAUHMA).
He has been the Chief Medical Officer for the South African Ice Hockey Association and is currently an International Tournament Medical Director for the International Ice Hockey Federation, having previously been the Principal Medical Officer for the IIHF World Championships. In these respects Andy will add a new dimension to the practice.
Andy attended the first 2 international consensus conferences on concussion in sport and is therefore well placed to work in our well-established sports concussion programme. He has an interest in paediatric and adolescent medicine as well as sports traumatology and has always utlised exercise as an intervention in the management of medical conditions in his 22 years of practice. He has been involved with the schools concussion programme in Johannesburg for the last 2 years.
